...and instead remain at a level of moral development that is led solely by rules they deem rigid and unmalleable"

How can this be?

Every morning, in the peaceful early hours of the day, I sip on coffee and read to learn. Given my reflective nature, most often this sends me pondering, processing and wondering how real or true that piece of information might be. I shared this morning routine with a friend once and she was taken with the phrase I used to describe this process...."Reflections over coffee". And hence a blog is born.

Today I read these words in a textbook. "Many people never reach a level of morality that is judged by internal ethical guidelines and instead remain at a level of moral development that is led solely by rules they deem rigid and unmalleable"

How could this be possible? How can so many act only because there are a set of rules in place? Are we failing as families? As peers? As friends? In the workplace? How can we help our children become individuals who see that the world does not rotate solely around them? How can so many think only about what impacts them directly? In keeping with Maslow's hierarchy of thinking, is it because so many struggle everyday to meet their basic physiological needs, thus life never allows them the luxury of moving from the triangles base? Or are some so self absorbed in the meaningless materialism of life and their own comfort that they really do not care about others?

Would love to hear your thoughts and ponderings?
